Xbox app to launch on Samsung Smart TVs in June, but only 2022 models

09 Jun 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Microsoft and Samsung today announced that the Xbox app that will let you stream over 100 Xbox games, including Halo Infinite, will launch on Samsung 2022 TVs on June 30.

Microsoft's plan to embed the Xbox experience directly into Smart TVs with no console or extra hardware required, except a controller, will become reality this month.

The bad news is that the Xbox app will be available only on Samsung Smart TVs, with no other TV brands announced. Furthermore, it will be limited to 2022 Samsung models with Tizen 6.5 and only in countries where the new Gaming Hub is planned to launch.

Samsung is not updating Tizen in previous Smart TV generations so 2021 Samsung models are stuck on Tizen 6.0, 2020 models on Tizen 5.5 etc.

- "Together, Samsung and Xbox partnered to bring Xbox Game Pass to the millions of Samsung Galaxy phones around the world, and now we are partnering again to bring our Xbox gaming experience to their 2022 Smart TVs. I’m excited for you to experience cloud gaming on Smart TVs on June 30 in 27 countries," said Ashley McKissick, CVP of Gaming Experiences & Platforms, Xbox.

- "We are bringing the Xbox App to Samsung Smart TVs first, and our intent is to explore other TV partnerships as part of this next evolution in our vision."

With the Xbox app and an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership you can play over 100 high quality games through the Xbox app including titles such as Halo Infinite, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction and Forza Horizon 5. Fortnite will be available without a membership. The app will be compatible with the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Elite Series 2 Controller, the Sony DualSense, and other controllers. They will connect to the Samsung TV over Bluetooth.

Game streaming will be limited to 1080p at 60fps, seemingly without HDR. Dolby Atmos is not supported either. The Xbox app will launch together with the Gaming Hub on Samsung 2022 TVs. The Gaming Hub will also offer access to Nvidia GeForce Now, Google Stadia and Utomik. - "The Samsung Gaming Hub will be available in select regions around the globe on 2022 Samsung Smart TV models beginning June 30th and beyond," said Samsung. The Xbox app will be available on the following Samsung 2022 models as well as 2022 Samsung Smart Monitors.
