But now it seems that the South Korean tech giant wants to make it easier for people to buy foldable phones, as the company has decided to dual-source the ultra-thin glass (UTG), a main component in foldable phones.

The tip we have received suggests that Samsung is going to start dual-sourcing UTG glass, with Corning receiving one share and another share going to a company that is not disclosed at the moment. With this move, the company hopes to increase the mass adoption of foldable devices.

The tip also talks about how approximately 40% of the cost of foldable phones comes from the display, so it makes sense why Samsung is going for dual-sourcing the UTG panels, considering how it could save the company a significant amount of money. Not just that, this will also encourage users to spend their money on foldable devices, and last but not least, it will allow more affordable foldable phones in the market, as well.
For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at $1,799, whereas the Galaxy Z Flip 5 starts at $999. While the clamshell foldable is still cheaper than most flagships in the market, with the new move, Samsung will be able to make more affordable foldable phones. Perhaps a Fan Edition foldable, as well.
Sadly, we cannot say more about what Samsung has in store for us, but it is safe to say that starting next year, we can start seeing more and more affordable phones, and who knows, the next Galaxy Z series devices are even cheaper than the ones that are available in the market. It is good that companies are focusing on bringing the foldable phones to the mainstream. While they can't take the traditional-styled phones head-on, they still offer enough features to keep a power user occupied.
