Intel’s next desktop CPU to be called Core i9-14900K
Yesterday, Intel unveiled its new branding for the Intel Core series of products. This announcement was lacking details what will happen with the desktop series.
What was mentioned by the Intel presentation and multiple reports covering the Core brand update, initially Intel will only apply new branding for its Meteor Lake series. This presentation did explicitly mention what will happen to desktop models though, namely the rumored Raptor Lake Refresh.
As we learned from leaked roadmaps, Intel is set to release a faster version of its Raptor Lake chips for the desktop and mobile segment. The primary goal is to offer higher clocks and support faster memory with the updated Raptor series and this should apply to both the desktop Core-S and mobile enthusiast Core-HX models.

The next desktop series should be part of the 14th Gen Core series, as confirmed by people familiar with the matter. The Chinese media “Golden Pig Upgrade” has always been one of the first outlets to share Intel plans for upcoming products. Their video explains what will happen to the Raptor Lake-S/HX series which should drop into the 14th Gen Core segment, while Meteor Lake and Raptor Lake-U/P models would utilize the new branding.

In short, the video tells us that the Raptor Lake silicon will appear with new and old naming schema, but the new Core 3/5/7 branding will only apply to mobile low-power U-series. Furthermore, Core Ultra branding will exclusively be used by Meteor Lake chips, while Raptor Lake refresh will lack this branding. In essence, we are observing exactly what happened to Ryzen 7000 series with AMD’s attempt to mix many architectures under a new product series.
