Work on the Galaxy Ring has reportedly kicked off, with Samsung currently operating in the development phase of the smart wearable. Like several smart rings out there, this one will likely ship with health-related features, along with an added bonus; the possibility of being paired with Samsung’s future AR headsets.
Current limitations of the Galaxy Ring may include inaccurate readings, Samsung may find a way around this
Samsung will not develop the PCB of the Galaxy Ring, according to The Elec. Instead, Japan’s Meiko is to be in charge of making that specific component and is currently testing rigid and flexible circuit boards. The size of the smart ring was not discussed, but the device is said to be better than the Galaxy Watch in terms of accurate health readings, but it is unclear if the Korean giant will mass produce the product. The company has also filed a patent for the Galaxy Ring, with the image below showing that it can integrate with Samsung’s AR headsets and glasses.
One of the biggest problems with smart rings is that the fit needs to be an exact match of the wearer’s finger. Assuming that the ring is placed loosely around a finger, it may not deliver accurate readings of the person due to improper blood flow detection. Also, Samsung cannot tighten the Galaxy Ring any further because it might become uncomfortable for wearers to keep the device on their fingers for extended periods. One workaround for this problem is an adjustable PCB, where users can extend the ring’s size, depending on how thick their finger is.
The patent does not talk about an adjustable ring, but we wanted to mention this feature since we believe it would be a useful implementation. Also, we do not have any information on what the GalRing’sng’s purpose would be when paired with Samsung’s AR headsets and glasses, but we can speculate that when both devices are integrated, health readings could be displayed on the headset’s and glasses’ visor to keep wearers updated on their vitals.
While the Galaxy Ring might be a useful accessory in a variety of situations, the report states that Samsung has yet to decide if the product is scalable. When sufficient numbers are run, we will likely hear more updates on the device, but for now, this is all we have.
