These Google apps are getting more optimizations for Android tablets

With the launch of Android 12L earlier this year, Google made its intentions clear to make Android tablets and foldable devices more productive and user-friendly. The company promised to overhaul the design of 20 of its apps so that they could take advantage of bigger screens. Today, the company is rolling out updates to some of those apps.

Google's Workspace apps, including Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Keep, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, are the first to receive tablet-focussed usability optimizations. These apps now support easy drag and drop for text and images. You can now drag columns from Google Sheets and drop them in a document in Google Docs. Similarly, you can drag an image from Google Chrome and drop it into Google Drive.

Another neat feature that Google has implemented with Google Drive is the ability to open multiple windows. For example, you can open two separate folders in two windows and keep them side-by-side to compare files or drag and drop files from one window to another. You can do that by clicking the three-dot menu and tapping on the Open In New Window option.

The company is also making it easier to work on a tablet by implementing keyboard shortcuts. You can cut, copy, paste, undo, and redo using the same keyboard shortcuts you use on a computer. You can even navigate around the UI easily using keyboard keys, which improves work speed and productivity.

These tablet-specific optimizations will come to Samsung's Galaxy tablets with the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update later this year or early next year, depending on the model. Samsung itself has been improving the UI of its stock apps for foldable phones and tablets over the past couple of years.
