The time is right now for The Nevers — that is, if you want to watch a teaser and see first photos for Joss Whedon‘s long-gestating Victorian sci-fi drama for HBO.
Set to debut this April on HBO as well as stream on HBO Max, the six-episode series is set in the last years of Victoria’s reign, as London is beset by the “Touched”: people, mostly women, who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities — some charming, some very disturbing.
Among the Touched are Amalia True (played by Outlander‘s Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Red Rock‘s Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. “They are the champions of this new underclass,” reads the synopsis, “making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.”
Watch a teaser below:
The Nevers‘ cast also includes Olivia Williams (Dollhouse), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons), Rochelle Neil (TV’s Das Boot), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Amy Manson (Once Upon a Time), Pip Torrens (The Crown), Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story), Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Elizabeth Berrington (Sanditon), Kiran Sawar (Pure), Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith (Babylon), Nick Frost (Into the Badlands) and Ben Chaplin (The Letter for the King).
Whedon — who stepped away from the day-to-day of the project back in November, saying he was “genuinely exhausted” — created the series and executive-produced it with Bernadette Caulfield, Ilene S. Landress, Doug Petrie, Jane Espenson and Philippa Goslett (who will serve as the new showrunner).
Genuinely exhausted? It is probably best for the series. It sounds intriguing.
This looks amazing. Will keep my eye on it.
this looks really good.
Well I know what I’m watching
Buffy jump!
So it’s just Victorian X-Men?
Well there are no men with powers in it so…no? There are male characters but the ones with supernatural powers are the women. But there’s a scientist and they may have been experimented on so I don’t know if they have those abilities on their own. Like I don’t think they’re “mutants”
ugh… I Really want to boycot this because of Joss, in solidarity W/ Rey Fisher but the trailer looks really good, and I enjoy supernatural shows lol.
Has Fisher made any concrete allegations yet? Everything I’ve seen him put out there has been super vague and seemed more like a disgruntled actor upset that he didn’t get more screentime than anything else. I’m a Whedon fan, so I’m a bit biased, but it just seems like it was a tense situation — an unfinished film that the studio didn’t like rough cuts of and a very limited timeframe and budget for rewrites and reshoots. Gotta be super stressful for everyone involved. I have no doubt that Joss was probably a dick sometimes as he was trying to get through it all, and he & Fisher didn’t work well together. That doesn’t amount to abuse imo.
But anyway, I stopped paying attention to Fisher’s allegations a while back because he never actually alleged anything. Has that changed? Can you point me in the direction of something talking about his specific complaints?
Then you haven’t been paying attention. No one is going to do your homework for you, no one is going to babysit you and do it for you and “point out” what you can Google on your own.
1) this is a conversation, not school. No homework involved. 2) I did and all I saw were quotes about abusive behavior. Nothing specific or substantive. I specifically said that I hadn’t been paying attention, but even after a Google search, nothing jumped out. If you’re supportive of his claims, explain what those claims are. I’m legit not being snarky here. I’m genuinely curious about whether anything was ever actually revealed or if it was just those vague statements he made for several months.
Beyond Ray Fisher, you have to see Whedon’s past history as a questionable and morally bankrupt person. He has admitted to cheating on his wife, gaslighting her, sexually exploiting women under him etc. – the works which is tragic because he calls himself a ‘male feminist’.
…screaming at Gal Gadot when she didn’t want to have Ezra Miller’s face land on her boobs.
He’s not going to be showrunner or doing much writing on after the first season so…watch it if you want. Remember hundreds of other ppl did work on this, just because he’s attached doesn’t mean their work is lesser.
Ray Fisher is a whiney little b&tch. He had a bad boss, just like many people do, and when he FAILED to make his case against him, he went after several other people. With NO EVIDENCE, the case was looked into and meeting were held. Ray still didn’t get what he wanted and is pushing it because his career now rides on it.
Gadot had the same issues. Held a meeting. Solved said issues. Went on her way. Why? Because she isn’t a whiney little b%itch.
Ray is fame seeking. He cried RACISM where there was none. He is going after well respected studio heads that didn’t actually do anything, just didn’t take poor baby Ray’s side in the matter. Looks to me like if you don’t take his side, he want to destroy your career.
Joss Whedon has worked with THOUSANDS of people and yet there is just THIS guy. Justice League wasn’t even his movie. It was stressful. The perfect Storm for a clash of personalities. And yet, why are there not droves of people coming forward saying that Joss is an evil so and so? Aquaman? He didn’t say much, did he. Gadot? Handled her s*it in a professional manner. Still working. And if you want to throw Charisma at me, she recently posted on twitter about Joss and the Angel situation. NOT the same thing she said. Had to do with her pregnancy and storylines. She never said Joss mistreated her.
Ray had a case and should be heard, but he went WAY overboard and thought he was going to make a name for himself with this. He doesn’t want justice. He wasn’t to be right, even if he isn’t. Perception is a strange thing.
Laura Donnelly is great, but Joss…why bother investing in it? Maybe if he gets fired and someone else takes over I’ll consider it…
Oh, right, I forgot he left the “day to day”. Still sideyeing it though
Umm… he got fired (well, “stepped back”) and someone else took over. You’re safe.
No Joss, No me
Exhausted the new code for I’ve gathered so much ill will with my questionable behavior and crappy work I don’t want to give the project a case of the bad PR.
I’m excited to see another Whedon/Espenson/Petrie show.
Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention to the trailer, but I have no idea what this show is about other than something about old timey x-women… sure looks pretty though. Joss’s TV shows haven’t let me down yet — and it has a fantastic cast and creative team even without him at the helm anymore — so I’ll definitely give this a watch.
I’m starve for something supernatural and it looks interesting. I’ll check it out.
Looks like fun so far! Plus some of those visuals are stunning!
SIX EPISODES? This has been in the works for so long and that’s all? Well, at least since it’s not Fox there’s a chance they will be shown in the intended order, right?
I hear u with the 6 episode BS. That’s basically the same thing they’re doing with the Marvel shows coming to Disney Plus. We should get minimum 10 imo. JS
We seem to be heading towards the british model of tv more and more. 6 to 10 eps of a show is now a season(‘series’ for those anglophiles). But you should be more focused on the quality over quantity. The Netflix marvel shows were just 13 eps, but that was about 3 eps too many! Another way to look at it is your getting a 6-Hour movie in six parts. Just remember the old adage, “leave them wanting more…”
+124 TVLine Power User points (no cash value)
It also means more TV shows and variety as streaming services compete for more properties and try to fill more space, since the seasons are so short.
Oh you can repeat that again. I’m all for methodical pacing but the Netflix Marvel shows killed my interest in Superhero shows with their horrid pacing.
I take it you don’t watch much British tv? Most of the series done by British tv is 6 episodes or less and they still end up being better quality than American tv.
Style over substance. It is a pretty trailer, but based on the trailer it doesn’t tell you what the show is actually about? All i got was Victorian-era women kicking butt because, of course, and making quips in posh accents? Ooh, edgy!
this is a teaser not a full trailer so it did its job getting people interested in the show without telling too much Im sure once a full trailer comes out we will know
Looks promising to me and this team, even Whedon light, definitely delivers
You must be an arbitrary Whedon fanboy, tell the truth, he was fired for being the absolute trash that he is. “Genuinely exhausted”. Smh. Do better.
Whilst we can all speculate over what happened the quote is the one approved by both Joss and HBO and neither you nor any other poster here knows exactly what happened. Matt is being a responsible journalist reporting what is known and not simply printing assumptions, I don’t believe he deserves your personal attack. Do better,
Thank you!!!
Joy.. Don’t watch!!! We are here for the series. He’s not involved… And Matt is only reporting on the series. Yes! We have all heard the allegations and innuendos..
Idk.Running a show and being on set 18+ hours days isn’t easy especially in his mid 50s.He also tends to work a a couple projects at time.He stepped away from running Buffy n s6& ended a season later due to being” tired& feeling creatively it was time”..He’s also under a emotional/mental stress with his ex’s open letter and Ray Fishers allegations. He might’ve been making this show me as JL movie or something and felt it too much too hard to juggle both.I’d think If he was fired that would’ve been reported not just him stepping down due to being tired.
Joss Whedon really brings the passion out of people. I’m watching this. Anyone who doesn’t want to. That’s cool. There are at least a thousand other shows.
That seems a little dark than I was anticipating. Still gonna check it out though
