AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Hits 5.80 GHz All-Core Overclock

An AMD Ryzen 9 7950X 16-core processor was spotted by TUM_APISAK hitting an impressive 5.80 GHz all-core overclock. This was made possibly by running the chip at 1.4 V, something that should normally scorch the chip close to its 95°C Tjmax point, but the CPU-Z Validation page reveals a temperature of 39.5°C. It's highly likely that some exotic cooling method is being used, such as a chiller (a cooler that uses pressurized refrigerant to cool. Sadly there's no CPU-Z Bench run associated with the validation to confirm if the setup is stable. Elsewhere, we see Sampson post an impressive 5.45 GHz all-core OC, and this time it's stable with a Cinebench R23 score of 40498 points in the multi-threaded test.

From what I've seen, even with aggressive OC, the Zen4 "big dog" run below 250w.

Impressive despite the temperature...

Heh... That is what I basically think when I hear this type of nonsense. I want to see real life numbers.

Not these " du - du - du - duel" marketing talking points being battled around by people with no life.

Power won't be the user's bottleneck with Zen4, but rather thermals. AMD and media will explain why and how on release, next week

Do you know what is really interesting? The Intel T chips with 35 W. Nice low clocks with high IPC and many cores (including E cores). AMD has their E chips too but AFAIK they are OEM only (unlike older Bulldozer-derivative generations when you still had retail 35/45W chips).

Intls' T CPUs has turbo north of 100w, if you chassing 35W you always can set custom limit on both AMD or Intel

This chip @35 watts would kick ass without any E core's.

What's an Intel T chip got to do with this though.

And AMD E core's are not a thing though they do have mobile configured chips with normal core's that run that low.

I bet thats a one time run only at 1.4V. It would otherwise degrade the chip just like previous generations.

I find it impressive that some chips can clock this high with low voltage, while others need 1.4v.

It would be great if AMD could control these silicon properties to produce only gold chips.

Without being gunned down by AMD for talking under contract, I can say that what AMD can do with its power play is going to impress many many people.

Intel 35W chips are practically OEM only as they are rarely available to the DIY market.

That's why I said E chips, rather than E cores. I was referring to APUs such as the Ryzen 5 2400GE. Also, I doubt a 16-core at 35W is going to be very impressive in any other way than perhaps multithreaded performance. What T chips have to do with this is that there is still option to get modern chips that are highly efficient because they don't have ridiculously inefficient frequencies just to catch eyes.

About 100W peak is still a lot better than the hundreds of watts that "normal" chips draw these days. I can live with that if it only occurs for very short periods of time in extreme scenarios. Tweaking limits yourself is nice but I have no idea how to do that on Linux because there is no special proprietary software for that that runs on Linux. I just want sane defaults out of the box rather than this marketing nonsense.
