THIRD-PARTY CHATS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8 update, we announced that WhatsApp was working on complying with EU regulations by developing third-party chats support. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) aims to regulate the behavior of large tech companies, particularly those considered “gatekeepers”, which have a significant impact on the digital market. One key aspect of the DMA is the requirement for these companies to enable users to communicate with each other using various apps. While third-party chats support is still in development on the Android app, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.2.10.72 update, which is available on the TestFlight app, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on bringing this feature to a future version of the iOS app!

WhatsApp is mentioned as one of the companies that will be subject to the regulations outlined in the DMA. The term “gatekeeper” implies that WhatsApp holds a dominant position in the messaging market, and as such, it will need to adhere to the strict rules set forth by the DMA. As a result, WhatsApp is currently in the process of introducing a new section that will contain all incoming messages from third-party chats, as shown in the attached screenshot.

One key benefit stemming from the DMA and WhatsApp’s efforts to comply is the introduction of interoperability. Users will gain the ability to communicate with other people on WhatsApp using different messaging apps. Interoperability enables someone on a different messaging app, like Signal, to send messages to a WhatsApp user, even without a WhatsApp account. This facilitates more inclusive and diverse communication channels, enhancing the overall user experience. It’s important to mention that users will have to maintain control over this feature, as they are required to manually enable the interoperability service and have the option to opt out, as stipulated in Article 7 of the regulations. In addition, end-to-end encryption will have to be preserved in interoperable messaging systems, ensuring a good level of security for users engaged in cross-platform communication.

A chat interoperability feature to comply with new EU regulations is under development and it will be available in a future update of the app. As always, we are going to publish another article when we have further details about this feature to share with you.
