TL;DR
  • An extensive firmware leak has revealed absolutely everything about the Nothing Phone 1.
  • Previously unknown camera specs and features have also leaked.
  • The firmware also discloses details about the Phone 1’s manufacturer.

Carl Pei’s Nothing is all set to launch its first smartphone — the Nothing Phone 1 — at an online event scheduled for 4 PM BST (11 AM ET) today. However, a last-minute leak by developer Kuba Wojciechowski on Twitter has left absolutely nothing to the imagination.

The dev claims to have access to the phone’s firmware, revealing details down to its smallest features. The firmware also indicates that the Nothing Phone 1 is made by BYD Electronics, a Chinese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer). ODMs are responsible for designing and producing devices that are sold under OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) branding. In this case, that’s Nothing.

Nothing Phone (1)’s premiere is tomorrow. The full specs and features of their most overhyped product to date will finally be revealed. You don’t have to wait though – I have obtained the firmware and found out everything there is to know! 🧵

Wojciechowski points out that the phone’s software is also partially designed by BYD Electronics, which is why the device contains many generic Chinese apps. For instance, the firmware reveals that the 400MB camera app on the Nothing Phone 1 is a customized third-party app that includes configurations from other Chinese manufacturers. It should support HDR photos, some beauty modes, panorama, bokeh, macro, time-lapse, simple filters, and an expert mode.

The Game Mode on the phone also seems to be a third-party solution and contains a lot of references to Chinese apps and some strings that match some Meizu devices.

Nevertheless, we’ll only be able to judge the software once we have the phone in our hands. The tipster points out that the Phone 1 runs Nothing OS 1 based on Android 12. The phone’s wallpapers have also leaked and are now available to download.

Nothing Phone 1 specs and availability

On the hardware front, the leak confirms details that have been out there for a while. Phone 1 is expected to house the Snapdragon 778G Plus chipset and a 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display. The firmware tells us that the device will get a primary 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor, a 50MP ultrawide Samsung JN1 sensor, and a 16MP Sony IMX471 selfie shooter.
