NVIDIA: Only 50 cases of melted power cables globally

Shortly after the investigation by GamersNexus was completed, NVIDIA is now ready to share official statement on the problem of melting power connectors. It appears that the GN finding were indeed correct.

Earlier this week GamersNexus concluded their week-long testing of melting power cables with the following finding. The issue can be reproduced when the cables are inserted incorrectly or, what is also possible, due to foreign object debris caused by manufacturing.

In response to this investigation, NVIDIA has now confirmed that their initial findings based on 50 cases globally is that the melting issue may occur when the power cable is not inserted correctly. The company recommends that users should first ensure the cables are firmly and evenly plugged in before installing the card into the system.

The provided number of 50 cases globally is very low. GamersNexus concluded the problem has thus far affected 0.04% of RTX 4090 cards sold. The total number of sold RTX 4090 is estimated at 125,000 – this number was provided independently by several board partners, GN notes.

NVIDIA will support all customers whose card are impacted, including Founders Edition or custom models. It does not matter which cable was used either, so adapters or native implementations are all covered by RMA process.

Furthermore, the company is providing this image as an example of improperly inserted cable compared to doing it correctly. The power connector must be inserted fully to the point where no gap is visible.

NVIDIA is still investigating all new cases of the melting cables, connector, and adapters. If your card is affected by this issue, unplug your card from power immediately and make sure to start the official RMA process. Everyone else should ensure that their cards are properly installed and hopefully no problems should occur.
