Multiple things play a role in your computer’s performance. One such factor is the RAM speed. Not all RAM is equal, and if you are someone who works in an environment that requires a lot of data or is a gamer, this speed is essential for you. This tutorial will show you how to check RAM speeds on Windows 10 or 11 computers.
Check RAM speeds on Windows 10/11
The two most common speeds are 2400 MHz and 3200 MHz. If you have an existing RAM of 8GB 2400 MHz and increase the RAM further, you will have to buy more. If you purchase a 3200 MHz RAM to install alongside the existing one, your PC will automatically run the 3200 MHz at 2400 MHz. You have to ensure that the RAMs you install are at the same speed to get ideal working conditions. So, ensuring the speeds before investing can pay off.
There are three ways you can check the RAM speeds. I will walk you through all three:
- RAM Sticker
- Task Manager
- Command Prompt
RAM Sticker
The installed RAM has a sticker on it that displays the memory and speed of the RAM. You can open your PC to check this RAM, or if you are buying one, you can read it from the sticker. Different manufacturers show this speed differently so the placement can vary. In the image below, 8GB is the memory, and 2400 is the RAM speed. PC4-2400T is basically the overall data rate in MB/s.
Task Manager
If you find the previous method a hassle, there is another way you can check the RAM speed.
Step-1: Right-click on the Start menu to open the WinX menu in Windows 10. Use Shortcut keys Win + X in Windows 11. This shortcut works in Windows 10 as well.
Step-2: Select Task Manager.
Step-3: Click on the Performance tab.
Step-4: Select Memory from the left pane.
Step-5: You will see a Speed label on the right-side. This shows the RAM speed.
Check RAM Speeds in Command Prompt
Another method for checking RAM speeds is via the Command Prompt.
Step-1: Go to the Start menu and type cmd. Click Open.
Step-2: Type the following command and press Enter:
wmic memorychip get speed
Step-3: As soon as you press enter, you will get the RAM speed.
