Nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning— virtually, by Leslie Jones (SNL), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Tatiana Maslany (Perry Mason) — and HBO’s Watchmen led the pack with 26 total nominations, including for Outstanding Limited Series and stars Regina King and Jeremy Irons.
Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel placed second with 20 total nods, followed by Netflix’s Ozark and HBO’s Succession, which amassed 18 apiece.
Going by outlet, after slipping to second place in 2019, Netflix reclaimed bragging rights this year with 160 (!) total nominations to HBO’s 107. Rounding out the Top 5 were NBC (47), ABC (36) and FX (33). Among new streamers, Disney+ racked up 19 nominations to Apple TV+’s 18 and Quibi’s 10.
Some (but far from all!) of the notable first-time individual Emmy nominees include Cate Blanchett, D’Arcy Carden, Billy Crudup, William Jackson Harper, Annie Murphy, Kaitlin Olson, Octavia Spencer, Cecily Strong and Zendaya.
This year’s ceremony, in whatever socially distant form it takes, will air Sunday, Sept. 20 on ABC, hosted for a third time by late-night TV vet Jimmy Kimmel.

Bad day for the Breaking Bad guys with neither Odenkirk or Paul nominated.
I was surprised too. I am happy to see Kerry and Issa get nominated, but I am elated Yvonne also got a nomination!! Insecure had a fantastic season and I’m happy that it’s being recognized.
What We do in the Shadows is a nice surprise.
How was Bob Odenkirk not nominate for Better Call Saul?! This past season was the best season thus far, and he is far deserving of the nomination and the win
And Rhea Seehorn!! WTF?????
I second that WTF.
I third that WTF?
..or Rhea Seehorn or Jonathan Banks. I guess they had to make room for all their diversity noms.
Who in those categories would you say didn’t deserve it, and was down to a diversity nom?
Lol at people who think “diversity noms” are a thing.
Lmao it’s hilarious how some of y’all actually think white people get everything based on merit while everyone else are just “diversity noms”.
Bob and Rhea both being snubbed, but Giancarlo being nominated, is absolutely bizarre and disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I love Giancarlo and he’s a fine actor, but Gus’ character (by design) has nowhere near the depth and humanity, nor the range of storylines, as Jimmy and Kim have had. I was really rooting for the both of them to be recognized, they’ve done such extraordinary work and were stunning and constantly compelling in S5.
Both of those actors (Bob and Rhea) would be in different nomination categories than Giancarlo.
That’s not what I meant, I meant – what made Giancarlo more worth recognizing in his category than Bob and Rhea in their respective categories? Which sounds like I’m hating on Giancarlo and I’m not at ALL, he’s very good, but objectively the performances ask so much more of Bob and Rhea (and Tony Dalton), so I can’t figure out what made Giancarlo the one to be recognized from the show specifically while the others were snubbed.
Really surprised (in a good way) with the nomination for The Mandalorian. The Good Fight and The Morning Show deserved nominations for best drama though, they were snubbed. So was Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (though maybe they grabbed a nomination in the supporting categories – not known yet). VERY HAPPY with The Good Place nomination (aswell as Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Dead to Me), though I wish Kristen Bell would be nominated aswell.
Tom Pelphrey was robbed! He should have been nominated for Ozark
Absolutely!
He got screwed over. His performance was the highlight of what was another excellent season of Ozark.
I was hoping I somehow missed it. He’s what made this season so great! In a season of great performances, he still managed to standout.
Tom left off the list is the worst of the snubs. In the taxi scene I said “and the Emmy goes to” I said he would win and no nom?!
I absolutely adore The Mandalorian, but getting nominated over This Is Us seems a little strange.
This is us was not as good last year, deserved to lose its spot.
The novelty of This is Us has kind of worn off. It hasn’t really done anything as of late to make people think that it’s more than just another network drama.
Only one nomination for Normal People? Ridiculous.
For Paul Mescal, instead of Daisy Edgar Jones, Double ridiculous
I thought his performance in episode 10 was quite extraordinary. She was absolutely amazing though and definitely deserved a nomination.
Annie Murphy! Tough competition, but she was amazing.
Most award shows are a joke, Leslie Jones is super annoying, Killing Eve had its worst season and no one deserved nominations, or the show, Leslie Jones is annoying. I honestly did not watch most of the series to have an opinion one way or the other, but I love Laura Linney.
Leslie is hard to watch and even worse to hear. She’s not funny and just stands there and screams.
And she is going to be the host of the new Supermarket Sweep?? Which I’ve been waiting for how long?!? Ugh
Excited for all the Schitt’s Creek love, especially Annie Murphy’s nomination. The break-up scene with Ted was perfection.
Yes! That is the scene that likely got their attention. Love Annie, and the entire cast!
None of the 3 actresses for Unbelievable?! I find that unbelievable ;-)
Toni Collette got nominated in supporting
I don’t think it was listed when I posted – I thought they had been pushing Toni for lead
All 3 were deserving but they probably split the vote
Collette has been submitted for supporting for the Globes and Critics Choice (which she won)
Here’s hoping that Schitt’s Creek wins everything their nominated for!! Hands down one of the funniest, well cast, and well written shows ever…gonna miss The Roses =)
Me too! All of them should win, IMO. Great show.
It can only be described as a criminal act that Al Pacino was not nominated for Hunters
lol 20 minutes of him hamming it up was enough for me
Such BS. There needs to be a separate Emmy’s show for network TV. Im tired of all this cable crap getting all the noms. There are better actors and TV shows on CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX.
Cable shows are simply better because they’re not constrained by censorship. Remove FCC censorship rules, then watch network TV rise to the level of cable programming.
Rubbish. A show isn’t better or worse just because it can show more violence or nudity or use stronger language. Some of the best performances by actors I’ve seen this year are by Patrick St Esprit and Jay Harrington (SWAT) or by Neil Brown Jr and AJ Buckley on SEAL Team, but no way is a show on CBS getting nominated.
.
The bias towards cable and streaming is quite simply cork sniffing by the critics so they can say they watch things that aren’t popular and so they know better than the masses.
Lmao at thinking the acting on some crappy cookie cutter procedural is better than anything that was nominated. That’s funny…tell us another one
You’ve shown your own bias, but I’ll bite. Check back on the Performer of the Week columns and see how many nominations have been given to those shows on this very site.
Rubbish. Pretty much the proof is in the product. We have a historical record of exactly what you disagreed with. Get real.
Im guessing its just trump voters complaining about this. Get with the times. Most people stream.
Lol! Youre obviously a trump supporter. Why are people like you so stubborn to accept the fact more people stream than watch live.
1. I’m British, so Trump has no relevance for me, and politics has absolutely nothing to do with tv dramas and comedies anyway
2. Numbers have nothing to do with quality. If a show is good I’ll watch it, whether it’s on a US network, a British one or a streaming service
The Good Place and even Schitt’s Creek were probably the best comedies of the last several years and both follow FCC guidelines.
So your point is void.
If there are better actors on CBS/ABC/NBC/FOX, why weren’t they nominated? It’s been proven in recent years it’s not impossible for shows on basic cable to get nominated (This Is Us cast members, The Good Place cast members, Andre Braugher this year, The Good Wife, etc). Find actors who are better than some of the nominees listed above. I dare you
I so agree with you MaryElizabeth – I watch the major networks, one show on Fox (The Masked Singer) – the shows that are on the list are shows I have never even heard of. We don’t have HBO, Netflix, Showtime…so I won’t be watching the Emmy’s since I have no idea who all but one or two that I know. I’m sure I’ll find something interesting to watch on another station.
Most of these shows get released on video. For example out of the best drama series nominations only The Mandalorian has yet to be released on video. Rent them from the library if you don’t have money.
They have money. They just refuse to get with the times. Theyre old people.
Maybe YOU should get with the times! Not everyone who doesn’t have money for streaming is old. I’m glad you think everyone has money, Ben. Why don’t you send some to us that can’t afford streaming?!
It used to be like that. At its onset, cable programming was ineligible for Emmy consideration. So the CableACE Awards were started in 1978. These were strictly for cable programs. But as cable programs became more popular, the Emmys started to include them as eligible for Emmy consideration. This made the CableACE Awards unnecessary and they were cancelled in 1998.
I mean network TV has kind of devolved quite a bit in the past decade or so. Most network television shows don’t bring anything unique to the table, and anything that does usually gets cancelled within one or two years because there’s an alarming lack of patience by audiences to stick with them. Gone are the days of The West Wing and Malcom in the Middle where the writing was unique and people would actually appreciate it.
Im guessing you are over 60. Its 2020. People are streaming. Stick to ncis boards.
How do you know? You sound like someone who refuses to give anything but broadcast shows a chance, because thats what was around in your day.
I agree with you.
I second that! Most of what I watch is on those networks, and I love them! (plus, the greatest actress I’ve ever known is on broadcast!)
Listen, I love me some network TV. So much. But it’s ridiculous to think that any of the shows can compete with cable and streamers. Their performers are better and their shows are better. Obviously, you haven’t watched Ozark.
I’m surprised The Morning Show missed on drama considering all the acting nominations.
No big surprises there but sad that the morning show didn’t get best drama nom.
Also normal people not getting more nominations is absolutely ridiculous. It is such a brilliant show.
Man, Reese got the MAJOR snub!
Oh god yes! She was in Big Little Lies, the morning show and little fires everywhere and she wasn’t nominated!
She deserved to be nominated at least for little fires everywhere!
I think what hurt her is that with all those shows you listed she basically played the same character on each one.
I would only say her characters on Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere were similar (and she was vastly better in LFE than BLL)
They all felt very familiar if that makes sense. I agree that on LFE and BLL they were essentially the same performance compared to TMS. Still, TMS character has similarities and is very on brand with the characters she plays now. I guess I just don’t see her stretching her talents like she used to.
MJ Rodriguez earned a spot for POSE. Her work was beautiful this year! Billy Porter is not the only one delivering award-worthy performances; the ladies deserve recognition too!
So true. Those actresses and actors on Pose deserve to be recognized.
Leslie Jones was worse than fingernails on a chalkboard this morning, with the screaming and the rushing through announcing some nominee names she could gush/scream like she was having a tooth extracted over others.
As for nominees, glad to see the Schitt’s Creek love and Mrs. America
s recognition.
I agree. I like Leslie Jones, but she was annoying as hell with all the schtick she was doing. I eventually turned it off and decided to read the nominees instead.
TVLine — what were the dates for eligibility?
It is always June 1 – May 31.
June 1 2019-May 31 2020. “Hanging episodes” were extended until June 30, which allowed episodes to air after May 31, but a series had to premiere by May 31.
Some gratifying noms here, but, even if I expected it, it’s very disappointing that The Plot Against America was ignored. And for something different, how about the very well done and maybe too genre-ish Evil? (Of course that’s a network show.)
Yeah, of the network shows that might fit with what the Emmys are looking for, I would’ve thought “Evil” might get at least one nod, given the people involved and all.
Aside from the noms for Schitts Creek and the Good Place, yay for D’Arcy finally scoring a much deserved nomination, it feels like this list was pretty much cut and pasted from last year. I am probably the only one but Marvelous Mrs Maisel noms are disappointing. I wish the Emmys would nominate new people rather the same ole same ole.
Absolutely nothing for Mr Robot? That was one of the best final series I’ve ever watched. Remi Malik definitely deserved a best actor nod and I’ve had given Gloria Reuben a best guest actress nomination for her performance in episode 7 and the abuse revelation.
Exactly! That performance was even better than his oscar win!
It was a tacky, easy, and incredibly unnecessary layer of that story. The performances were great but it was so sad to see a pretty good season of the show derailed by a dumb shock value addition that served no purpose other than to shock.
Where are Merritt Weaver and Kaitlyn Dever for Unbelievable? ESPECIALLY Kaitlyn. Robbed.
Yes! All 3 of those women should have been nominated. Especially Kaitlyn. She broke our hearts in every scene.
I am all for Sterling k. Brown getting recognition for This is Us, but the fact that Justin Hartley was overlooked for his extraordinary acting as Kevin Pearson is an absolute disgrace. He was brilliantly heartbreaking and funny, and loving, and he should have gotten a nod. It’s not right. also know Milo has had a lesser role this season, but when he is on camera, he shinesand should have gotten his recognition also
Just came here to say this. Justin got snubbed again. He is acting his butt off and gets snubbed every year. Mandy also deserved a nom. She is killing the Alzheimer storyline.
THIS. I think Justin’s performance this year was definitely Emmy nod worthy. Kevin had such a great story arc this year. Also, where is Mandy Moore??? This woman is dying on the series, and nothing??
Agreed with both of these comments! Justin and Mandy continue to get snubbed. Honestly I thought Justin should have earned at least a nomination for his work back in season 2 – the scene on the football field and his breakdown in the front lawn of that women’s house. And he was so great this year too. And don’t even get me started on Mandy – she play the same character across a 60 year span. her work this year was heartbreaking and beautiful and so accurate. It’s insane that she isn’t nominated.
I have often thought that because Justin Hartley is understated and not as intense as Sterling K. Brown that his performance is often overlooked by Emmy voters and viewers. The same with Milo.
