Intel shows off 14th Gen Core “Meteor Lake” mobile packages at Vision conference

The ‘lucky’ 13th Gen Core “Raptor Lake” might have not been shown yet, but Intel is now taking pride in presenting not one but two packages for upcoming 14th Gen Core series, codenamed “Meteor Lake”. This product is not expected till 2023. 

The new architecture will be Intel’s first consumer product to feature a new tiled architecture, with each tile serving a different purpose. This product will feature as many as three different fabrication nodes, adding complexity and cost to the design. However, Intel is on track with Meteor Lake, which has been extensively communicated at each stage of the development.

At Vision event, Intel has showcased a normal size package and a high-density one, each theoretically offering the same configuration, but different power characteristics. The smaller package could end up in ultra-light 2-in-1 designs and possibly handheld gaming consoles.

Meteor Lake architecture will feature Compute die (Intel 4), Graphics die (TSMC N3) and SoC die (TSMC N4/N5). The architecture will be based on Redwood Cove and Crestmont core architecture, to be paired with new Xe-HPG architecture featuring up to 192 Execution Units.

The tiled approach gives Intel more flexibility when it comes to configurations. Intel could now easily expand the core or GPU configuration by replacing each tile with more powerful ones. This is what might happen to more powerful mobile and desktop variants of Meteor Lake, which have not yet been presented.

Intel confirmed Meteor Lake will scale up to 125W, meaning there is a desktop variant coming, but it has not yet been showcased. Intel recently informed that its 14th Gen Core series are now on track to launch in 2023. This probably means late 2023, considering Raptor Lake is now expected by the end of this year.
