When it comes to folding displays, Samsung Display is right at the top, as the company is responsible for bringing foldable phones to the market. However, the one foldable form factor that we have not seen in the market so far happens to be a foldable tablet, and that might happen soon as the company has unveiled a 12.4-inch rollable OLED panel that actually rolls up. The company is calling it the Rollable Flex, and well, it looks impressive.

Samsung's new display tech hints that we could soon roll up our Galaxy Tablets like a scroll and put them away

Just like the Sensor OLED, the Rollable Flex was unveiled during the SID Display Week 2023 event. The new OLED display is capable of unrolling into a 12.4-inch display. Users can extend the display from just 49mm all the way to 245.4mm, which means that your phone can turn into a tablet, or your tablet will become incredibly compact.

So, how does this work? Well, you see in the image below the whole display looks like a scroll; Samsung Display has confirmed that this is by design because the O-shaped axis actually helps the display roll and unroll, and all of it looks like a scroll, which is pretty cool. Of course, this is just a panel that the company has shown, and we will potentially get a different style based on the same mechanics when a rollable tablet actually takes place. In addition to the Rollable Flex, Samsung Display also showed off the Flex In & Out OLED that can easily fold inwards and outwards, unlike other offerings in the market.

As for when Samsung will make these displays available in its technology, that is something we will have to wait for. The company also showed a new type of OLED panel that comes with a heart rate sensor and a fingerprint scanner built right into the display that could debut in future Galaxy smartphones. As for the Rollable Flex, we could see a folding tablet at the end of this year, but it has not been confirmed so far, so we are going to have to wait and see when the technology finally becomes available for mainstream devices going forward.

Samsung also introduced a number of exciting display technologies that you can check out in the full press release. You can go check it here for complete information on what the South Korean tech giant is up to.
