Canon, the best-known camera brand, will stop making DSLR cameras. The company has confirmed that the Canon 1D X Mark III is its last flagship DSLR camera. Canon has said that it wants to shift its focus towards mirrorless DSLR cameras therefore it would not produce flagship DSLR cameras anymore.

In an interview with the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, CEO Fujio Mitarai said that the production of flagship DSLRs will be wound down within a few years. “Canon’s SLR flagship model is known as the ‘EOS-1’ series, the first of which appeared in 1989. The latest model ‘EOS-1D X Mark III’ released in 2020 will be the last model in fact. The market needs are acceleratingly shifting to mirrorless cameras. In line with this, we are steadily shifting people. The demand for beginner and intermediate SLR cameras is strong overseas, so we plan to continue development and production for the time being,” he told the daily.

Canon had unveiled the 1DX Mark III in January at a price tag of (roughly Rs 4,84,789). It is still the most sought-after flagship camera for professional photographers.

Canon in a statement had clarified that the company will only stop producing DSLR cameras but flagship DSLR cameras like the Mark III. The spokesperson said in a statement to PetaPixel that the company only wants to focus in making mirrorless DSLR cameras.“Naturally, we are considering an RF mount camera as our next flagship model,” he said.

The company is yet to reveal when Canon will wind down production of its flagship
DSLR cameras. “The broad details of Mitarai’s interview as described in the article are true“However, while estimated as ‘within a few years,’ exact dates are not confirmed for the conclusion of development/termination of production for a flagship DSLR camera,” the spokesperson said.

As per PetaPixel, Nikon too has shifted its focus to mirrorless cameras only. It has also stopped making flagship DSLR cameras. Nikon too may only launch mirrorless cameras in place of flagship DSLR cameras.
