HIGH-QUALITY VIDEOS

In the article about the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.12.13 update, we shared some information regarding a new feature that was made available to select beta testers: high-quality photos. This feature finally allows users to easily share photos with improved quality while preserving their dimensions. When sending a photo using the high-quality option, a new tag indicating it as a high-quality photo is visible within the message bubble. In the past few weeks, some users also noticed the same tag being applied to videos. However, the process behind this automated tagging for videos remained unclear, and users had no control over this feature. With the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.14.10 update, we discovered that WhatsApp is now rolling out a feature to send high-quality videos!

As you can see in the attached screenshot, WhatsApp is now introducing a button within the drawing editor that allows users to send high-quality videos. Just like we mentioned in our previous article about the high-quality option for images, this feature maintains the dimensions of the video, but light compression is still applied. This means that you can’t share videos in their original quality, but the final quality will surely be better with this option. Similar to the high-quality photo feature, the default option for any video is always “Standard quality”. So, whenever you want to share a new video with better quality, you will need to select the high-quality option each time. Note that if you want to discover if this feature is enabled for your account, it may be necessary to select a video that is large in size; otherwise, the high-quality option may not appear.

When users share a video using the high-quality option, it will be marked as a high-quality video in the conversation. As happens with high-quality photos, a new tag is automatically added to the message bubble when a video is shared by using this feature, making it easier for the recipient to identify that the video was sent in better quality. It’s important to note that this feature is not available when sharing videos through status updates.

The ability to share videos with better quality thanks to the high-quality feature is rolling out to some beta testers that install the latest update of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and it’s rolling out to even more people over the coming weeks. Note that support for high-quality videos is also available to select users on WhatsApp beta for iOS, and it will be announced in a new article when the rollout is wider.
