The Galaxy S23 Ultra was the first smartphone to launch with the Gorilla Glass Victus 2, giving it improved protection against drops. As for the Ceramic Shield protecting the iPhone 14 Pro Max, this technology debuted on the iPhone 12 series. As for durability, a new drop test shows Samsung’s flagship to be significantly durable and should be your go-to device if you have the propensity to drop your expensive smartphones from time to time.

A single drop shatters the Ceramic Shield of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra fares significantly better

In the very first drop test, which YouTube channel PhoneBuff called the back drop test, the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max make contact with the unforgivable slab of concrete on their backside. Samsung’s flagship comes out relatively unscathed with minor cracks, but the iPhone suffers the most, with small pieces of glass removed from its housing. This part of the test shows the Galaxy S23 Ultra as the clear winner.

However, in the second test, which was the corner drop test, we have another tale to share. Since the Galaxy S23 Ultra has sharp corners, the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 suffer noticeable damage. Fortunately, the rounded corners of the iPhone 14 Pro Max protect it from harm, but the earlier drop test already inflicted a boatload of damage to the point that the shattered glass becomes even more apparent in the second drop test.

Last, we have the face drop test, and both the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s displays suffer from cracks, showing that irrespective of their protection, you should always slap on a case to protect these two from any irreparable damage. As a bonus, PhoneBuff removed the slab of concrete and decided to perform another test on the steel platform. The result was more or less the same.

The test shows that while Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is exceptionally durable, it also matters how the Galaxy S23 Ultra is dropped. Another thing to keep in mind is that while the glass technology has improved against drops, it does not fare well against scratches, as one owner of Samsung’s latest flagship reported that the handset obtained scratches just by being kept in his pocket, with no keys, coins or any other sharp object present in the same pocket.
