Chinese tech companies have a habit of racing ahead of the competition when it comes to advancements, and that is precisely what Xiaomi has done with its Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition. While there are few specifications provided, some features have been detailed by Xiaomi’s founder and CEO, Lei Jun, so let us talk about them.

The new Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition has specialized lenses that allow wearers to switch between the real world and simulations

Apple is yet to unveil its first AR headset in June and has pulled the plug on the development of smart glasses, giving Xiaomi the opportune moment to unveil the Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition. Lei took the chance to provide some of the device’s features, which include a lightweight chassis comprising of carbon fiber and magnesium-lithium alloy. You might have heard of these materials being used to mass-produce thin-and-light laptops.

While carbon fiber and magnesium-lithium alloy are nowhere near as durable as a unibody aluminum chassis, both materials are incredibly lightweight than the latter, making them the ideal choice for the Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition. The specifications of the smart glasses were not provided by the CEO, but we believe that Xiaomi will likely rely on Qualcomm to deliver SoCs dedicated to fueling AR and VR experiences.

The press images show two large cameras on the left and right-hand side of the glasses, with a small unit present right in the middle. All three sensors will likely be responsible for transmitting visual data and converting them into simulations for the wearer. Compared to Apple’s AR headset, which is rumored to feature a whopping 15 cameras, having just three on a pair of glasses might be inadequate.

In the press images, Xiaomi reveals that it will use electrochromic lenses, which lets users switch between the virtual and real world at will. The switching of modes could happen through a dedicated button, but Xiaomi’s CEO did not mention this. Another disappointing aspect of the Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition was the launch timeframe, and pricing was not mentioned either, so it is possible the Chinese manufacturer decided to get some eyeballs on future products that might not even materialize, simply for the sake of the spotlight.

In any case, let us know what you think about Xiaomi’s efforts in the comments. Of course, Apple is behind the competition, but it is only because the technology giant does not wish to roll out a half-baked product to the masses after investing potentially millions in R&D.
