LG WebOS TVs Become World’s First To Get Key New Gaming Feature

Following
This article is more than 2 years old.

LG has a proud recent history of TV ‘world firsts’ when it comes to console and PC gaming. So it’s perhaps not surprising to find it announcing another gaming first today, in the shape of a new app for select 2021 LG TVs that brings Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud game-streaming service to TVs for the first time.

The app is scheduled to become available globally (in 80 markets) in a fully functioning Beta version from Friday November 19 on some LG 4K OLED, QNED Mini LED and NanoCell TVs. Provided you have a compatible TV, once the app is rolled out in your region you’ll find it in the LG Content Store. And once installed it will give you access to more than 35 free-to-play games with no additional hardware required (provided you already own a compatible controller).

The list of GeForce NOW streaming titles available include big hitters such as Destiny 2, Rocket League, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy and the Crysis Remastered trilogy.

Titles will run at resolutions up to 1080p and frame rates at up to 60fps, with GeForce NOW ‘Priority’ members (£44.99 for six months subscription) additionally getting access to the service’s most advanced platform, offering support for ray tracing and AI technology, priority access to streaming from Nvidia RTX-powered servers for the most responsive gameplay and superior graphics, and six-hour session lengths versus the one-hour sessions available on the ‘free’ version of the service.

“LG customers are expecting the best when it comes to gaming on a large screen,” says Lee Sang-woo, senior vice president of corporate business strategy at LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. “Partnering with NVIDIA to bring GeForce NOW to LG TV owners is a sign of our commitment to deliver the best gaming experience on LG TVs running webOS.”

Strangely given how close the feature is to launching, LG isn’t yet in a position to announce the complete list of its TVs that will be able to handle the GeForce NOW app. I’ll update this article, though, with this information as and when it does appear.
