Intel has confirmed the microarchitectures for its next-gen CPU series

The company names the core architectures for its 2024/2025 low-power mobile series.

Intel has recently provided several updates regarding its Lunar Lake CPU series. Among these, the most significant is the beginning of work on the next-generation integrated graphics architecture known as Xe2 or “Battlemage”. This architecture will also be incorporated into the Lunar Lake GPU tile. The term “Lunar Lake” pertains to Intel’s upcoming client CPU architecture, succeeding Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake. This new design follows a disaggregated approach with separated CPU, SOC, and GPU tiles.

In addition to the fresh insights into the GPU tile, which is said to house up to 8 Xe Cores, we have also gained information about the CPU tile. Intel has introduced new CPUIDs to its ‘perfmon’ software. The open-source data attached to this software library has unveiled the names of core designs from past iterations, like Meteor Lake’s “Redwood Cove.” Intel has now officially confirmed that the Lunar Lake chips will be powered by Lion Cove and Skymont. The former, labeled as ‘Cove,’ is anticipated to serve as the architecture for the large Performance cores, while ‘Mont’ is expected to drive the next-generation Efficient cores.

Notably, these codenames were initially associated with Arrow Lake, a product projected to cater to a wide range of CPUs, from entry-level to high-end. In contrast, Lunar Lake is explicitly aimed at low-power devices, possibly explaining the shared utilization of these core designs between the two series.

Intel has reiterated its objective of achieving production readiness for the Lunar Lake series by the second half of 2024. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the series will indeed be prepared for launch within the same year.
