AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 gets a GDC 2023 tease

At Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2023, the AMD software engineering team is sharing the first details on the next upscaling technology.

The AMD GDC briefing on FSR3 does not give all the answers yet. The technology is still under active development and there is not even a release date when it might become officially available. Nevertheless, the successor to FSR2 and highly anticipated competitor to DLSS3 might be the most important technology AMD will release this year.

Despite the announcement nearly 4 months ago, it is clear that AMD still has a long way before it can ship the technology that relies on frame interpolation, just like NVIDIA DLSS3. However, AMD might have an ace up their sleeve and that’s support for more than just one GPU architecture. This was indicated by Azor Frank in November last year, but the GDC update provided no further comments on this subject.

Instead, gamers and game developers can learn that the AMD software team is aiming at 2x performance compared to FSR 2.0. Such a boost would be possible thanks to a higher number of pixels generated through interpolated frames.

AMD expects FSR 3.0 gameplay to be a smoother experience over FSR 2.0. The company is putting great effort on reducing latency, which is the key in achieving the best gaming experience. Furthermore, AMD wants to make the FSR2 to FSR3 upgrade path as easy as possible. This would undoubtedly have a considerable impact on how quickly the third gen FSR is adopted.

More importantly, AMD confirms that FSR 3 will be open source through the MIT license. This means that third upscaling tech from AMD will be free to grab and easily editable by anyone. Once FSR3 is ready, the company is likely to release samples and full documentation. Once this happens, NVIDIA DLSS3 games may quickly start seeing FSR3 mods, just like they did with DLSS2/FSR2.

FSR 3 will be available to developers under an open-source MIT license to provide optimal integration and flexibility.
