Philips unveils 2021 OLED TVs in 48-77" with HDMI 2.1, Ambilight

27 Jan 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

For the first time, Philips OLED TVs will be available in 77 inches in addition to the 48, 55 and 65-inch versions. Philips 2021 OLED TVs also come with HDMI 2.1, Android 10, and 4-sided Ambilight.

Philips 2021 OLED TVs

Philips (TP Vision) has today unveiled its new OLED TVs for the first half of 2021. OLED806 and OLED856 will replace last year's OLED805 and OLED856. Additional yet-to-be unveiled OLED models are expected to launch in the second half of 2021. For the first time, Philips OLED will be available in 77 inches (in addition 48, 55 and 65) in the OLED806 series whereas OLED856 will exist only in 55 and 65 inches. OLED856 has a V-shaped stand in a dark chrome whereas OLED806 has a two-legged metal stand. They are otherwise identical in terms of picture, audio, and processing technology.

New for 2021 is HDMI 2.1 support with 4K120, VRR (40-120Hz), eARC, and ALLM. In addition to VRR, Philips said that its TVs will be AMD FreeSync Premium Pro certified. With all of these HDMI 2.1 features baked in, Philips OLED TVs are now able to take advantage of the HDMI 2.1 features in PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and compete head-to-head with other HDMI 2.1-enabled OLED TVs coming out this year. Follow the link to learn more about HDMI 2.1. The company said that its P5 video processor has reached its fifth generation with a new 'Film Detection' feature that can recognize a movie and adjust its processing accordingly. There is support for HDR10+ Adaptive, which Samsung and Panasonic will also support this year. It is not a new format but a system that can adjust the brightness level (for HDR10+ content) to match the viewer's room conditions (day, night etc.). It also highlighted an improved BFI (Black Frame Insertion) system named 'Fast Motion Clarity' with 4 settings available; Off, Low, High or AI. - "TP Vision’s PQ experts have added an additional sixth category, with Film detection joining Landscape/nature, Face/skin tone, Motion/sports, Dark/contrast and Other. The AI function automatically selects the correct category and analyses all five PQ pillars, to adjust the balance between them - in order to create the most life-like image. The inclusion of Film detection also allows the 5th Gen P5 to automatically ‘flag’ movies and offer the viewer the option to switch modes – including to a new Home Cinema Mode, Pure Cinema Mode or FMM," the company explained. Last year's anti burn-in technology that analyzes the video to dim logos and other static elements in the picture will in 2021 be available in the 8-series OLED TVs. The company previously said that the system is unique to Philips TVs and that it "removes the anti-burn problem for 95% of static images, including logos and gaming content".

Ambilight on all four sides

Philips TV is synonymous with Ambilight and both OLED806 and OLED856 will come with the 4-sided version. Ambilight can be set to a static mode (bias lighting) or a dynamic mode to match the colors in the picture. Ambilight features integration with Philips Hue, Spotify, and more. The TVs run Google's Android TV operating system and come with Android 10 pre-installed. We are chasing information about the company's plans for Google TV, which is the new user interface on top of Android TV. With Android TV the user has access to streaming apps like Disney+, HBO, and Netflix. The TVs come equipped with a 2.1-channel 50W speaker system. Philips is still collaborating with Bowers & Wilkins but their speaker technology is usually reserved for the high-end 9 series OLED TVs that arrive in the second half of the year. Like last year, DTS Play-Fi enables the TV to connect wirelessly to compatible speakers. The remote control has leather sides and backlit buttons.
