AMD Phoenix in another gaming console
GPD Win 4 is getting a second refresh this year.
The company launched a Ryzen 7 6800U version just a couple of months ago (March), but the same platform is compatible with the newer AMD APUs based on an entirely different architecture.
The updated model features either Ryzen 7 7840U or Ryzen 5 7640U APUs. The latter option is actually not a very common choice among gaming console markers, despite still featuring a lot of horsepower. The closest we got was the ASUS ROG Ally with Ryzen Z1 non-Extreme chip, which is most likely based on a similar APU but with less GPU cores and custom power profiles.
The Ryzen 7000 upgrade means that the Zen3+/RDNA2 APU has been replaced with a Zen4/RDNA3 combo. This guarantees higher performance and better power efficiency. The 7840U option enables 8 cores and 16 threads up to 5.1 GHz, while 7640U has 6 cores and 12 threads enabled boosting up to 4.9 GHz. The CPU core count goes in-line with the integrated GPU changes, as the 8-core model features full 12 CU @ 2.7 GHz spec and 7640U should have 8 CU up to 2.6 GHz. Interestingly, that’s still twice as many GPU cores as the cheaper ROG Ally, which is to come out later this year.

According to official specs, the 2023 model will feature more memory options, including a 64GB variant. But more importantly, the memory speed has been updated to LPDDR5x-7500 standard, an upgrade over 6400 MT/s on the early 2023 model. Finally, GPD will also offer a 4TB storage option.
Going further into specs, we learn that the screen size and resolution has not changed. The updated console has the same chassis with identical dimensions and weight. It really does appear that the only changes were introduced to the APU/memory/storage options.

The GPD Win 4 2023 heavily reassembles the Sony PSP handheld platform, which sported 4.3-inch screen (same size as the first iPhone). Now the standards have changed and the smallest screen size on a handheld is 6 inches (6.2 in on Nintendo Switch), but the most interesting feature of this console is not the size of the screen but a full physical keyboard hidden underneath the screen.
According to GPD, the 2023 model will be released in August this year, which means 5 months between 6800U and 7840U consoles. Pricing has not yet been confirmed.
